If Memorial Day was the unofficial start of b-b-q season, 4th of July is when things start to get real! Maybe for that party you served some burgers and hot dogs, a few beers and some simple sweet treats. Independence Day, though? We think it's time to break out the big guns!

Sure, you'll still want to serve the old stand bys but fancy up those burgers and dogs by creating a gourmet bar with specialty sauces and condiments, in addition to your ketchup and yellow mustard. Think beyond the usual pickles and onions on toppings and give radishes, avocado or baked beans a chance.

Want to skip the burgers altogether? Try some seafood - garlicky shrimp or salmon on a cedar plank? Yum! And, don't forget about the sides. We think you haven't lived until you've tried grilled watermelon and pineapple.

Now, let's talk drinks, shall we? Independence day provides a perfect opportunity to combine delicious tastes with spectacular visuals. Variations on red, white and blue cocktails are abundant. Sangria, layered drinks, jello shots... or, skip the beverage altogether and soak your berries in vodka or rum and decorate them with sprinkles and pop them in your mouth for a quick treat that packs a punch.

Be sure to save some space for dessert. Best enjoyed with a side of fireworks.

We Pinned It: Om

Yoga has been around for centuries and while it has become quite trendy with a certain cross section of the population, it really can be for everyone. From toddlers to seniors, athletes to couch potatoes, and everyone in between. Even companies are getting into it by offering yoga as part of health and wellness initiatives (see Work from Om).

You can practice yoga alone or with a group. After coming off of a big event, it's often necessary to regroup and re-center. Sometimes, yoga *is* the event (check out New York Yoga Festival Events). You can even incorporate yoga into the event - i.e. plan a yoga session alongside your bridal brunch to calm pre-wedding jitters.

Today is International Yoga Day.

Click! As event planners, we spend a lot of our time making sure that everything is running smoothly. Did the guests get their name tags? Was the speaker's mic on? Were the appetizers brought out on time? Sometimes, when it's all over, we don't even remember what the room looked like, and we spent so much time on the seating chart! That's where photography comes in.

It's your event, so you call the shots. The photo shots, that is. Be sure to make a checklist of what you want to see. In addition to a professional photographer who can walk around and capture the highlights of your event, the trend now is to have a photo booth. They can an element of fun to an otherwise serious event or kick the merriment up a notch. Bonus? Ask your guests to post on social media, with a hashtag, and your event just got more publicity!

So, go ahead. Take a picture. It lasts longer! And check out our Pinterest board for more ideas.

We Pinned It: Dear Old Dad

Looking for something cool to do with dear old dad this Father's day?

If you're wanting something more than just a stroll in the park or a walk on the beach, consider a beer brunch on a yacht, on the Hudson River. Or, head out to one of the boroughs to find a street fair like the Brooklyn Makers Market for interesting wares and yummy eats.

Maybe Dad's not in the mood to be out and about?  No problem. Get comfy on the sofa, order some takeout and stream a movie on Netflix instead.

We've created a board filled with gift ideas, parenting advice, cool adventures and even a tutorial on how to tie a tie!

Happy Father's Day - June 19th.

While we are absolutely responsible for planning the logistics of an event, as event planners, we're also responsible for thinking about the full event experience. One of the things I've been learning more about in the past few years is the relationship between food and energy levels. Let's say you're planning a large conference packed with content. Is it the smartest idea to serve a large pasta lunch? Not necessarily because the carbs break down and cause people to lose energy. Pair that with a dark conference room and you're bound to have unengaged attendees. Another thing to consider is that as our attendees get more health conscious, they look for healthier and more energy-giving options at events. So, to make your life easier and inspire you with a few new ideas, check out our latest Pinterest board packed with ideas for healthier event bites!
